多年来，教育问题一直是中国社会的焦点问题，
清华大学经济管理学院院长钱颖一很早就引起了钱颖一的关注和思考。丰富的求学经历(清华大学、哥伦比亚大学、耶鲁大学、哈佛大学)和执教经验(斯坦福大学、马里兰大学、伯克利加州大学、清华大学)，让这位经济学家深入了解国内外教育的实际情况，中国教育的问题所在，并积极在一所学院探索教育改革的实践。担任院长8年多来，钱颖一没有再带过一个研究生和博士生，也没有申请过一个研究课题，而是集中精力，在清华大学经济管理学院推进教育改革，履行一个院长的职责。(中华工商时报评)[2]
钱颖一是经济学家，但在他的笔下和演讲中，却常常高频次地出现"法治"一词。十多年来，每当论及经济"转轨"和市场经济，他往往要强调"法治"的不可或缺作用。(新民晚报评)[3]
